The Picayune Police Officers Association (PPOA) recently made a donation to 11-year-old Cameron Guidry, of Picayune, to help defray part of the expense of his planned trip to compete in a national golf tournament in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

The PPOA is funded with donations automatically deducted from police officer’s checks each pay period.

“The association began over 18 years ago with then Picayune Police Chief Freddy Drennan,” said Capt. Theresa Milar. “The money for the (PPOA) comes directly out of officer’s checks and is dispersed to fund activities related to children.”

The Roseland Park 5^th grade student has been competing in golf tournaments since he was four-years-old, his mother Dawn Guidry said.

“Cameron practices with the high school and junior varsity golf teams,” she continued. “They even allow him to play the tournaments in Millbrook with the junior varsity.”

The 2014 U.S. Kids Golf World Championship is a big deal for Cameron, Dawn Guidry said. This is the first time that Cameron has attempted to raise his own funds and he is around $600 short of the $2,500 needed.

Picayune PD Captain Lane Pittman said, “Cameron Guidry appears to be a rising star in the golf world, at such a young age. We (want to) help this this little guy out with the expenses to continue with his dream.

“We as parents can all relate to wanting the best for our children. As we, at the Police Department, see it we feel responsible for all children even if they are not blood kin. If we can make a difference in one child’s life it is a blessing beyond all compare. We (want) to help Cameron continue to pursue his dream.”
