POPLARVILLE — Poplarville returns to the baseball diamond today in search of its first win of the season after a pair of tough one-run losses to open the new year last weekend.

The Hornets face D’Iberville at 4 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium here on the campus of Pearl River Community College as the PRCC Classic resumes.

In their first two games under the direction of interim head coach Lance Hendrix, the Hornets dropped consecutive games in the final at bat to county rivals Picayune and Pearl River Central in the annual Pearl River County Classic at Carriere.

Picayune took a 4-3 win over Poplarville, as Chance Seal took the loss in relief of Hayden Freeman.

The Hornets wasted no time in taking a quick lead, as Chandler Ray singled to open the game and then came home on a run-scoring single by Blake Ladner.

Freemen paced Poplarville at the plate with three hits, including a run scoring double to tie the game in the seventh.

Pearl River Central took a 3-2 win in eight innings over Poplarville on Saturday.

Ladner took the loss for Poplarville, in relief of Ray, who started.

Freeman registered a double and a single in the loss, while Ladner added a pair of singles as well. Justin Oliver and Brandon Spiers had singles also.

The Warriors stand 1-1 on the young season, after splitting a pair of games with two different Harrison County rivals over the weekend.

D’Iberville beat Long Beach 10-0 on Friday, before falling to Harrison Central and Dandy Dozen standout Bobby Bradley 7-2 on Saturday.

Bradley, who has signed with LSU, smacked a three run triple to give the Red Rebels an early lead in the win over the Warriors.

Poplarville will play a pair of games on Saturday, hosting Forrest County AHS at 1 p.m., on campus before returning to Wildcat Stadium on the PRCC campus to play East Central that night.
