Johnny Hall was sentenced to a total of 10 years in MDOC custody for two guilty verdicts associated with his 2012 escape.

According to a previous story in the Item, Hall escaped MDOC custody on Feb. 3, 2012 while attending his father’s funeral in Picayune. A chase ensued five days later after Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department personnel received a tip concerning Hall’s whereabouts. The chase involved speeds of 100 miles per hour and ended after Hall avoided a roadblock set up by the Bogalusa, La. Police Department on Highway 26, the previous story states.

Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department deputies took him into custody after a brief foot chase that took place after Hall ran into a ditch to avoid the roadblock, according to a previous story in the Item.

Hall was charged with escape, felony fleeing and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Fifteenth District Attorney Hal Kittrell said a jury of his peers found Hall guilty on two of the charges, the escape and felony fleeing, during a trial held Monday. The jury hung on the third charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Kittrell said. Judge Prentiss Harrell sentenced Hall to five years for each guilty conviction, to be served consecutively, during his sentencing hearing held Wednesday.

Initially the District Attorney’s office planned to seek another trial on the third charge, but Kittrell said an agreement was reached between both counsels.

“He agreed to take the 10 years day for day without eligibility of parole, we agreed to not further pursue the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon,” Kittrell said.

Hall’s counsel also agreed to waive appeal rights on the two convictions, Kittrell said. Hall was convicted as a habitual offender.
