East Mississippi sweeps Pearl River CC

POPLARVILLE — East Mississippi Community College proved to be a group of unwelcome visitors.

Homestanding Pearl River CC was swept by the Lions Wednesday as the MACJC non-division rival took 4-1 and 7-3 wins.

PRCC dropped to 11-5 overall, while EMCC improved to 14-4.

The Wildcats will try and bounce back from the pair of losses Sunday afternoon, hosting Illinois Central in a twinbill at Wildcat Stadium beginning at 2 p.m.

In the first game, things were scoreless for the first two innings before both squads scored solo runs in the third. East Miss took the lead for good with a run in the top of the fifth, then added two more in the sixth for the game’s final runs.

Starter Chase Cameron (1-1) picked up the win in his four-and-a-third innings on the mound, giving up eight hits, striking out one, and walking one, while Wildcat starter Jake Brumfield out of Adams Christian Academy in Natchez (3-1) picked up his first loss of the year in his five innings of action. Brumfield went five frames, giving up six hits, striking out one, and walking one, while Colton Lee of Pearl River Central High relieved for 1.1 innings, giving up a hit, striking out one, and walking one. Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High saw a third of an inning of relief, giving up a hit, while LeDarien Lee of Forrest County AHS also saw a third of an inning of action.

The Lions garnered with hits. Chase Reeves homered and singled (one RBI), Kyle Liberto had two base hits, LaDarious Clark doubled, and Colton Caver (one RBI), Chase Nyman (one RBI), and Trent Waddell all singled.

Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High paced the Wildcats eight-hit attack with a double and a single, while Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High, Kyle Dolan of Forrest County AHS, Kreg Garner of Northwest Rankin High, Tracy Hadley of Pascagoula High, Nate Pugh of Starkville High, and Jacob Taylor of Picayune High (one RBI) all had base hits.

Each team committed on error in the contest.

In the nightcap, EMCC went up 3-0 with a first-inning run and two in the second, while PRCC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Lions took the lead for good with two in the fourth before adding solo runs in the sixth and seventh. The Wildcats scored a solo run in the sixth.

Starter Andrew Crane (3-0) picked up the win in his two-and-a-third innings on the mound, giving up two hits and striking out one, while J’Daylin Jackson saw three-and-two-thirds inning of relief, giving up four hits, striking out two, and walking three. Hunter Swart pitched one inning, giving up a hit.

Luke McGee (2-2), an Ohio State transfer out of Wooster (Oh.) High, got the loss in his four-and-a-third innings, giving up eight hits, striking our five, and walking three, while Taylor relieved in the fifth, giving up two hits, striking out one, and walking a batter.

Nyman paced the 10-hit Lions with a pair of doubles (one RBI), while Reeves (two RBIs) and Waddell both doubled and singled. Clark doubled (two RBIs) and Liberto, Tyler Odom, and Colby Ramey (one RBI), all had base hits.

The Wildcats finished with seven hits, led by Derek Martin of Poplarville High with two singles, while Deanzel Johnson out of Lanier High in Jackson had a two-RBI double. Anthony, Garren Berry of Petal High, Pugh, and Taylor all had singles. Garner had an RBI for The River.

PRCC had four errors in the game.
