Senator Thad Cochran made a visit to Picayune Monday afternoon to let everyone know he will be seeking reelection.

“I’m here in your county to let you know I know you’re here,” Cochran said.

During his short visit to city hall, he addressed one hard-hitting issue, the events in Russia.

He said while he is not advocating war with the country, the United States needs to send a strong message to Russia that it would be a bad decision to continue European annexation attempts.

Born in Pontotoc, Mississippi to parents that were school teachers, Cochran said the most difficult part of his upbringing was he could not avoid his homework. However he said his parents were a positive influence.

Cochran remarked that he remembered his last visit to Picayune in 2009, just after Hurricane Isaac passed through the state.

“Last time I was here the water was knee deep in some people’s yards, and that was really sad,” Cochran said.

He pointed out Mississippi, and America, is a group of strong people who stick together and get through tough times. Cochran assured everyone in attendance that he will work to ensure the best interest of the state is assured.

Cochran has a long political career. He served 6 years in the House of Representatives after his successful run in 1972. He said his time in the House gives him a unique perspective into how the branch of government runs.

“I really feel like I’m as equipped as you can be to get things done for Mississippi and make sure our state gets our fair share,” Cochran said.

Cochran is currently serving his sixth term and will running against State Senator Chris McDaniel in the upcoming election.
