The Board of Supervisors approved expanding the Northeast Fire Grading District to cover all parts of the district on Monday.

Emergency Operations Management Director Danny Manley said that for a resident to be included in a fire district, they must live within five miles of a fire station. Thanks to a new Northeast station, all residents in the Northeast area are now covered in a fire district.

Manley said the only portion of the county not within a fire district is a 10 square mile area of Millard near the Interstate 59 exit.

“That’s a phenomenal feat to have almost the entire district rated,” Manley said.

Residents living in a Fire Grading District save on their homeowner’s insurance, Manley said.

“The volunteer fire departments are saving an individual homeowner over $3,000 a year by providing the services they do,” Manley said.

Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department received a new fire truck on Monday morning after the meeting from Deep South Fire Trucks.

The board was reimbursed $83,000 for the truck from the department. The Rural Fire Protection Grant paid for the $70,000 balance on the truck, said Board President J. Patrick Lee.

The board accepted proposals from architects and administrators for the 2014 Community Development Block Grant, which would fund courthouse repairs in Poplarville.

The board also appointed Pearl River County Director of Planning and Economic Development Ed Pinero, Supervisor Sandy Kane Smith and County Administrator Adrian Lumpkin to a selection committee to review the proposals.

Pinero said the committee would only review the requests from the companies that are interested in being administrator and architect for the grant and rank them based on their qualifications and workload.

The group with the highest qualification would be listed as administrator and architect on the grant application and would oversee the repairs to the courthouse in Poplarville, Pinero said.

The board approved two grants the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department received for the 2015 fiscal year.

Lee said the sheriff’s department received a grant for $98,738, which will fund two DUI enforcement officers. The sheriff’s department also received a $5,000 occupant protection grant, which helps fund enforcement of seatbelt safety and child restraint safety.

The board also approved advertising for the public hearing on the 2014 CDBG grant. The hearing will be held on March 21 at 11 a.m. at the County Administrator’s office.
