Victory bowl: Picayune PD spearheads fund-raising effort for state title rings

FUNDRAISER: Several different organizations came together over the weekend for a benefit flag football tournament to raise funds for the Picayune Memorial High School football team to buy state title rings.
The Maroon Tide Victory Bowl was held at Friendship Park on Saturday as a fundraiser for the football state championship rings.
The event was put together by the Picayune Police Department, and, according to coordinator Deputy Chief Chad Dorn, the tournament brought in $2,466, not counting money raised from the sales at the concessions stand by the Touchdown Club.
Muddy conditions were a challenge for the teams but they quickly made the decision to scale down their use of fields from four to three, and the tournament was underway.
At the end of the tournament, the Fire Department came in third place, the Gunslingers earned second place and the Dirty South left the field with bragging rights as the Victory Bowl Champions.
“We had a good show of community support and we had several local teams, with a few from out of town. I know we had one team from Gulfport and one from Wiggins,” Dorn said. “It was a fun-filled day.”
President of the Touchdown Club Sandy Kane Smith said, “$1,000 was raised through apparel sales, donations and concessions. We still need to raise another $10,000 to fully fund the rings.”
The rings will be ready by the end of the month, Smith said.
Deposits on the rings have already been made.
