The local chapters of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion honored Sherri Thigpen Monday for her continued efforts providing food for Christmas baskets that the VFW and American Legion distribute every year.

The Christmas baskets are for disabled and needy families in Pearl River County and provide enough food for each member of the family. The two groups have distributed 100 baskets to qualified families each year for the last five or six years, said Ronald Lowe, the quartermaster of the VFW.

“Everyone gets a pie thanks to Mrs. Sherri,” said Larry Kitts, commander of the VFW and vice-commander of the American Legion.

Lowe said they are recognizing Thigpen because of her continued support over the last several years.

“The members of the VFW and American Legion would like to thank Mrs. Sherri for supporting us in our endeavor to try and make Christmas a little brighter for our needy citizens,” Lowe said.
