The Picayune school board approved a request by car and camper dealer Dub Herring to display Picayune Memorial High School’s 2013 state championship football team on a local billboard.

The request by Herring to feature the team on a billboard sparked a discussion among board members at Thursday’s noon meeting of the board for the Picayune Municipal Separate School District about signs at the Memorial Boulevard entrance into the city from the Interstate 59 and at the Mississippi Highway 43 North entrance into the city from the interstate.

Those signs feature the 2002 PMHS state championship baseball team.

Board member Frank Feeley said he understood that the signs had been erected by the baseball boosters’ club. However, he and the other two board members at Tuesday’s meeting — board president Edward Stubbs and Jimmy Hancock — talked among themselves about erecting a sign that would feature all of the high school’s state championships. Mentioned was the recent state championship won by the High Tide thespians. Hancock suggested that a state championship won by any high school organizations be it sports, arts, music, dance or academics, be included.

Board member Patti Stewart was absent.

The board also received a new financial report and wanted to know why Business manager Lisa Penton said the state Department of Education suggested that local school boards should receive two financial reports. Penton said she decided on adding the cash flow report to a budget report the board already receives since that was one she already was creating for the department of education. Board members, on reviewing the report, said they approved of her choice.

The board approved an interim payment of $28,768 to GM&R Construction for work on the Roseland Park Elementary School multi-purpose building.

The board also approved a donation of $72 by the Roseland Park PTO to Roseland Park Elementary and a donation of $50 by BankPlus to the robotics team.
