Poplarville hopes a pair of big wins over county rival Pearl River Central earlier this week will propel them into even bigger wins over the next few days.

Both the Hornets and Lady Hornets travel to Pass Christian tonight and then head to Moss Point on Friday to wrap up regular season play in Region 8-4A.

Poplarville’s boys beat Pearl River Central 39-37 Friday night to move to a solid 14-9 on the year. Rojae Raine paced Poplarville with 11 points and Anthony Bonner chipped in 10 points to the winning cause.

Alex Travis tallied eight points to lead the Blue Devils.

In the girls game, Shaniesha Hudderson poured in a game high 15 points for Poplarville to guide the Lady Hornets to 32-30 come from behind win.

Poplarville overcame a seven point fourth quarter deficit to pull out the win.

Jessica Powers had 13 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots to pace PRC before she fouled out of the game. Brandi Lee, who also fouled out, chipped in nine points. The Lady Devils were 8-of-22 from the free throw line.

Tonight’s games at Pass Christian were postponed twice last week due to inclement weather.

On Friday, Poplarville’s boys face Moss Point and All-American Devin Booker is coming off a big week, one in which he not only set the career scoring record at MPHS but was selected to play in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Game.

The game takes place at 8:30 p.m. on April 2 in Chicago and will be televised by ESPN.

The 6-foot-5 Booker is included on the roster for the West team. He’s the first McDonald’s All-American from the Coast since Picayune’s Jonathan Bender in 1999. Gulfport’s Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (formerly Chris Jackson) and Moss Point’s Litterial Green each made the team in 1988.

Booker, who is averaging just short of 32 points a game this season, signed to play basketball at Kentucky in October. He broke the Moss Point record for most career points on Friday with 38 in a 75-53 victory over Pass Christian.

Booker has paced Moss Point to a perfect 7-0 mark in league play. He passed Litterial Green, who ranked second all-time, and the top scorer, David Booker (no relation) to reach his record total of 2,263 points.

Green was a college star at Georgia and David Booker played at Charlotte and Tulane.

Booker was recruited by nearly every national powerhouse, but chose the coach John Calipari and the Wildcats over Missouri, Michigan State, Michigan and Florida. He also received scholarship offers from programs such as Duke, North Carolina and LSU.

Booker was one of four Kentucky signees to make the McDonald’s All-American game. The others are point guard Tyler Ulis, center Karl Towns Jr. and power forward Trey Lyles.
