Poplarville Mayor Brad Necaise, a member of the Southern District Board of Directors for Mississippi Municipal League (MML) announced the Citizens for Economic Development Act (CEDA) Resolution is now in bill form in both the House and Senate.

“As a member of MML Legislative Committee, I wanted to make everyone aware of progress with CEDA,” Necaise said. “HB1566 was introduced by Rita Martinson and will be referred to the House Ways and Means Committee.

SB2952 was introduced by Kelvin Butler and will be referred to the Finance Committee.”

A resolution supporting the bill was passed during a Poplarville Board of Alderman meeting last month.

The bill would allow citizens of a municipality the choice of voting on imposing local sales tax. The additional funds would be able to be used for infrastructure and other projects that could enhance the quality of life and improve economic development opportunities without drawing on the state general fund budget.

“I support CEDA as it is the best and most economical approach to our city’s improvements and economic development. Most of all, it is voted on and determined by the city’s residents,” Necaise said.
