Busy weekend in the ‘Yune

Last weekend was filled with many options to have a great time for good causes in Picayune.

The Picayune Police Department orchestrated a flag football tournament to raise money for championship rings for the Maroon Tide football team. It filled Friendship Park with teams from all over Pearl River County and surrounding counties.

While that was underway, members of the Greater Picayune Arts Council and Greater Picayune Area Chamber of Commerce were busy decorating Southern Char Steak House for the Krewe of the Pearl Mardi Gras Ball which was held later that evening. The Chamber provides invaluable support in our area’s economic growth and development. Money raised will go back into the community.

The Picayune Police Department worked with Herring Ford and Pigott Insurance to provide a shuttle van for those who attended the ball to help them arrive safely if they had a drink. Officer Estes of the Picayune Police Department drove the van. He was professional, a safe driver and had a great sense of humor.

At Picayune Memorial High School, the High Tide Productions theater troupe were preparing for an evening fundraiser show to help them travel to a national competition. And members of First United Methodist Church were preparing for Scout Sunday for their historic Troop 2.

It is wonderful to know that our community comes together in the ways that we do to be supportive of each other and celebrate achievements.

Yes, it is hard work and sacrifices are made. No, it is not always convenient. But that is the type of community we have and what makes our town so special. We rise above and we give a helping hand, or whatever is needed, and then we play.

City growth is happening, and there is no doubt that it will continue. But as our geographic and economic boundaries grow and develop, I hope that we never lose the sense of community that we have right now.

It is a precious thing.
