Due to the significant increase in hazardous conditions, the City of Picayune has put a curfew into effect for 9 p.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Tony Bounds, public information officer for Pearl River County, said, “Although a curfew has not been enacted within the rural areas of the county, law enforcement and all emergency personnel ask residents to remain in their homes during the night due to the increase in dangerous conditions. Law enforcement will be out tonight to ensure your safety and the safety of the public.”

The Pearl River County Road Department has reported that they have halted all sanding and salting efforts for the night.

The department posted on their Facebook page, “As weather conditions have deteriorated, it is no longer safe to have work crews out at this time. We will resume patrolling and checking routes as conditions allow in the morning.”

The Picayune Police Department and Pearl River County Emergency Operation Center are both reporting that Mississippi Department of Transportation has pulled work crews from salting and sanding on highways and interstates due to the weather conditions.

Both the road department and MDOT will resume their efforts on roads and the interstate when weather conditions improve, Bounds said.

District Maintenance Engineer, Cate Jones and county Road Manager Dale Miller have advised that all road conditions are unsafe and travel should be halted.
