The Waveland Police Department arrested a former Pearl River Community College football player on Monday for capital murder, said Waveland Police Chief David Allen.

The arrest of Oren Joseph Lewis, 31, of Amar Street in Waveland stems from an investigation that began on Aug. 25. Police and emergency personnel responded to a medical call at his home on Amar Street in August, Allen said.

Lewis said he was home alone with his four children when his 22 month old daughter, Maleah Bush, was  injured as a result of falling off of a bed while asleep. Bush was transported to Hancock Medical Center and shortly afterwards transported to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, La., Allen said.

He said when emergency personnel arrived, the child was found to be unconscious and unresponsive.

“The doctors treating the infant reported her injuries included a massive traumatic head injury,” Allen said in a press release.

Allen said that after an investigation of the scene, reports from numerous experts and results from the autopsy, the police department determined it was not an accident as Lewis said.

“The circumstances were suspicious from the start,” Allen said on Tuesday. “Any incident where a child is hurt, we’re going to do a full investigation.”

Allen said Lewis was booked and transported to Hancock County Justice Facility where he is being held on a $1 million bond set by Municipal Court Judge Preston J. Mauffray.

Allen said the investigation is continuing and that the police department would not be releasing details of the case with a court date approaching.

A preliminary hearing has been set for Jan. 16, 2014.
