Picayune topples Tylertown, 76-59

The Picayune boys basketball team earned a bit of revenge Tuesday afternoon.

The Maroon Tide ended a two game losing streak with a 76-59 thumping of Tylertown in the Hancock Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Maroon Tide lost to Tylertown by three points on the road Saturday night, 73-70 in overtime.

Shemar Williams poured in a game high 33 points to pace Picayune. His 10-foot jumper at the halftime buzzer gave the Maroon Tide a 36-35 advantage at intermission. It would be a lead they would never relinquish.

Hakeem Magee added 16 points and 10 rebounds to the winning call, while Montrel Cage chipped in 11 points including three 3-pointers. Donovan Rice, with 10 points, put four Picayune players in double digits. The Maroon Tide is 3-4 on the season.

The Picayune girls fell to Pass Christian Tuesday afternoon in the same event 47-27. Maya Whitehead scored 19 for the Lady Tide, which dropped to 2-5 with the loss.

On Monday, Whitehead tallied 19 points as well and Tearrah Harris added 15 points as the Lady Tide beat Archbishop Chapelle out of New Orleans 44-32.

Both Picayune teams took on the host Hancock squads Tuesday night to wrap up the annual event. A full report on those games will appear in Friday’s issue of the Item. Both Hancock squads saw action earlier in the day Tuesday as well, as the Hawks beat D’Iberville 64-60 and the Lady Hawks beat Chapelle. It was a second close decision for the Warriors in as many days, as the D’Iberville boys rallied to nip Picayune 64-62 on Monday afternoon.

The Maroon Tide and Lady Tide traveled to Biloxi Tuesday night.

Both Poplarville teams played a pair of games in the Lawrence County Tournament this week.

The Hornets split a pair of contests beating East Marion 76-46 on Monday night as Anthony Martin and Emetric Fells tallied a game high 20 points a piece to pace Poplarville. Rojae Raine chipped in 14 points to the winning cause.

The Poplarville boys fell to Wayne County Tuesday 56-40. Nigel Wood scored nine points to lead the Hornets.

The Poplarville girls dropped a pair of games in the event. The Lady Hornets lost to East Marion 33-25, despite getting 10 points from Shaneisha Hudderson. On Tuesday the Poplarville girls fell to Wayne County 38-9.

In other action the Pearl River Central boys took on Bay High on the road Tuesday afternoon. A full report on that game will appear in Friday’s Item as well.
