The Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office received a call on Oct. 25 regarding the attempted theft of a diesel engine.

Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said the engine was valued at $15,000 and was being stored under an open garage.

The suspect, identified as Michael Miller, 22, of 560 Anchor Lake Rd., Carriere, “attempted to use a come-along and a strap to drag the engine up onto a trailer that had a wood base,” Tucker said.

Weighing too much, the engine was not successfully loaded onto the trailer and both were abandoned at the scene, said Tucker.

The investigation into the crime showed that there were two subjects at the scene, but the second person has not been charged in the crime, Tucker said.

Having brought the trailer with them and leaving it at the scene, investigators were able to track down the owner of the trailer, said Tucker.

Tucker said the owner of the trailer provided investigators with the name of the individual to whom he loaned it.

“Subsequently, Miller was later interviewed and charged with attempted grand larceny,” Tucker said.

Miller was released from the Pearl River County Correctional Facility on Oct. 28 on a $5,000 bond, said Tucker.
