A Carriere man was pronounced dead following a fiery crash involving a tractor trailer on Interstate 59 in St. Tammany Parish, La., Sunday night.

A tractor trailer ran over a mattress on the roadway that became tangled in the undercarriage of the truck, Master Trooper Greg Marchand said.

The mattress tore the airlines, fuel lines and electrical lines from under the tractor trailer, Marchand said.

The tractor trailer became stalled in the right, northbound, lane of I-59 and because its electrical lines had been torn by the mattress, its lights were disabled, he said.

Marchand said Thomas Neumann, 47, who was traveling north in a Ford F-150, struck the rear of the freight truck’s trailer.

The pickup became engulfed in flames following the crash with Neumann still inside his truck, Marchand said.

Neumann sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, the trooper said, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office.

Louisiana State Police reported that Neumann was wearing a safety restraint and impairment is not suspected.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not in the vehicle when the accident occurred and according to the release, he submitted to a voluntary breathalyzer, which revealed a blood alcohol count of 0.000-percent.

Marchand said the accident is still under investigation.

The Louisiana State Police urges motorists to report any debris or objects in the roadway.
