Truck damages old fence

The early Sunday afternoon calm here was unexpectedly broken when a pickup truck side-swiped two parked cars and plowed through a 90-year-old wrought iron fence.
The accident report stated that a 2006 Ford F50 truck driven by the Rev. Larry Head was traveling south on Main Street in front of Hancock Bank when it began pulling to the right and the steering locked, Poplarville Police officer Rossie Creel said. According to the report, the Rev. Head said he strongly applied the brakes but was unable to stop the truck, Creel said.
The two vehicles, a Ford Ranger and Nissan Sentra, parked in front of Hancock Bank were hit before the truck crossed over Magnolia Street, damaging the curb and a stop sign before plowing through the side fence and hitting two trees at the home of Joan Bassett of 702 South Main St., Creel reported.
There were no injuries, Creel said, but the Rev. Head’s truck was totaled and towed to Miller’s Auto Sales. The extent of damage to the other two vehicles is not known at this time.
Scooters’ restaurant across the street from the bank serves a Sunday lunch and patrons there often park along Main Street. Creel said his family had recently left the restaurant themselves but before the accident occurred.
The wrought iron fence appears similar to one that used to go around the front and sides of the Pearl River County Courthouse, according to old photographs. Local legend has it that fence was a casualty of one of the metal drives that occurred during World War II.
