The “Let the good times roll” dance, held on Tuesday, at the Senior Center of South Pearl River County, began as  a mission of sorts to get local seniors to events in daytime hours to prevent transportation problems such as driving at night and shuttle bus dependency.

On Tuesday, bus after bus arrived with seniors while other seniors either arrived on their own or chauffeured by relatives.

By all accounts, the dance was big success. The volunteers, Senior Center staff and those attending the dance were all smiles as the music filled the rooms at the center and couples hit the dance floor.

Executive Director of the Senior Center of South Pearl River County, Darlene Adams, said, “Many of our seniors do not like to drive at night. They miss opportunities of going to many of our evening special events. With the help of Grace Healthcare, we were able to provide a dance during the day so everyone could attend. Judging by the huge turnout, I believe it was a hit.”

Kathleen Penton, activities and volunteer coordinator for the Senior Center of South Pearl River County agreed that the daytime event helped in boosting the large turn out and was very pleased with the outcome.

“We have many people that contributed to the success of this event, volunteers and staff of the center. I have seen people that I haven’t seen in a long time, because they have come out for this dance,” she said.

Covenant Healthcare Representative, Melinda Pervel, was one of the first to greet the seniors and make sure that all of the ladies received a corsage.

“This is a really nice event and everyone is having a good time. We are happy to be here and be a part of this,” Pervel said.

Linda Caddell, who attended the dance with her husband Dennis, said, “It’s a really nice dance and there are lots of people here! We are enjoying ourselves; it’s good to get out.”
