An Alabama motel is getting a facelift about 18 months after a fire there killed four students from the Mississippi University for Women.

A Days Inn motel in the Birmingham suburb of Hoover is being changed into an Econo Lodge. The part of the motel where the women died has been demolished, and fire sprinklers have been added to a remaining section of the business.

A fire at the motel killed the four women in January 2010. They became trapped in a second-floor room after a blaze started in a room below them.

The city of Hoover hasn’t issued permits for the motel operators to rebuild on the location of the fire.
