It’s been a month since tornadoes bulldozed seven southern states, killing more than 300 people, yet nearly 100 Alabama survivors are still living in shelters where the nights are fitful and the days are long.

It could be a preview of what’s in store for some in Joplin, Mo., after a twister there killed at least 125 people and leveled entire neighborhoods.

The lingering shelter problem is worst in Tuscaloosa. The University of Alabama’s home city took the biggest hit in the April 27 storms, losing 41 people and hundreds of homes.

About 300 people were in Alabama shelters three days after the twisters hit. Now, officials say 89 people remain at a shelter in Tuscaloosa. In Birmingham, four people are still living at a church.
