Poplarville’s girls continued their unbeaten ways and also kicked off Region 8-4A action in fine fashion Friday.

The Lady Hornets of first year head coach Nicki Smith stopped visiting Pass Christian 52-49, moving to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Lady Pirates are 4-5 overall and 0-1.

Kendra Halll paced Poplarville in the win with 15, while Bretta Hart and Daquari Raine each added 14 points apiece to the winning effort.

Poplarville won the boys game 73-44.

Both Poplarville teams host Greene County in league play on Tuesday.

• In Carriere on Friday, Pearl River Central swept a pair of game from visiting St. Patrick’s.

In the boy’s game, Sonny Garcia sank a shot with less than a second to play to give the Blue Devils a 57-55 win.

Garcia paced PRC with 18 points in the win, and Cody Morris added 14 while Dennan Seal scored 10.

The Lady Devils took a 56-21 win, as Caroline Lumpkin scored 12 points and Sara Kerry added eight to the winning cause.

Both PRC teams host Vancleave on Tuesday.

• In Petal on Friday, South Jones swept Picayune in two game to open the Petal Tournament.

The Lady Braves remained unbeaten moving to 7-0 on the season with a 56-31 win over the Lady Tide.

“They are the best team we have played so far this year,” Picayune head coach Lacey Kennedy, whose team dropped to 4-6 with the loss, said. “Their size and quickness really hurt us.”

South Jones used a 9-2 run to close the first quarter to take a 19-8 lead. The Lady Tide got four straight points from Teela Hayes to cut the deficit to 24-16 mid-way through the second stanza, but the Lady Braves closed the first half with a 10-0 run to take a comfortable 34-16 advantage at halftime.

Keanna Magee scored 9 to lead Picayune.

In the boys game, the Maroon Tide dropped to 7-3 on the season as South Jones won a close 58-54 decision.

South Jones is 6-1 on the season, with their only loss coming to powerful Wayne County.

“I thought we played well defensively, we just couldn’t get enough shots to fall,” Picayune head coach Jason Kennedy said.

Derrione Stewart had 15 points for Picayune, while Marcus Rawls added 14. The Braves held Courtney Nixon to just eight points. Montavious Smith had 19 for the Braves.

Picayune played in the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday.

Both Picayune teams return to action on Tuesday hosting  West Harrison.
