On Dec. 2, Gail Coone Pendleton and her husband James were taking pictures for Facebook, kissing and laughing at the Brookhaven Christmas Parade.

Two days later, 41-year-old James Pendleton, was being booked into the Lincoln County Jail, accused of murder after he allegedly shot her in front of at least one of their children.

The Clarion Ledger reported Sunday that among Gail’s Facebook photos was an eerie picture of James holding a gun in front of his chest, and underneath it, Gail had playfully written, “My bad hubby but don’t he look good.”

Officials say James Pendleton allegedly shot Gail Pendleton around 2:45 p.m. at their home.

Brookhaven Police Department Capt. Bobby Bell said James Pendleton was arrested without incident. Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing confirmed he was booked into the jail.

Gail Pendleton, 29, a Copiah-Lincoln Community College cosmetology student, was a mother of a 9-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son, and friends described her as a fun, happy person.

Shelley Hamback of Bogue Chitto sasid Pendleton had a job lined up for after graduation and that she was looking forward to it. Her aunt, Penny Bailey, said all she had ever wanted to do was be a hair dresser and a good mother.

“She was a good mama. She loved both of her kids,” Bailey said. “They would go out and eat supper, and she’d take them to the park and play with them. They did a lot of things together.”

Co-Lin Public Relations Director Natalie Davis said the death is sure to have an impact on the small campus, especially in the close-knit cosmetology department.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this time. We’re just so deeply saddened,” she said. “Anytime we lose a student in some kind of tragic event, it hits home really hard, because we’re such a community ourselves.”

Bailey said from her perspective, James Pendleton had seemed to be a good husband to Gail, but her friends said it seemed that lately there could have been trouble in the relationship.

“I could tell she wasn’t as happy anymore,” said Hamback.

The children are going to stay with Gail Pendleton’s family.

Bell said James Pendleton will have his initial appearance in municipal court Tuesday.
