A home once owned by civil rights activist Amzie Moore and used as a safe house for people like Martin Luther King Jr. has been declared unsafe after it was vandalized.

The building in Cleveland is a historic landmark, but it has fallen into extreme disrepair. The Cleveland Heritage Commission has worked to preserve the house but vandals wrecked it this summer.

The Cleveland Board of Alderman will discuss the property during a meeting Nov. 2.

Darrell Moore, Amzie’s son, said that many people in the area don’t know the property’s significance.

Amzie Moore spent years pushing for civil rights. He helped organize the Regional Council of Negro Leadership, which promoted entrepreneurship and civil rights in the Mississippi Delta.
