The U.S. Justice Department has asked to join in a federal lawsuit filed against Mississippi’s capital city and its public transit system, claiming violations of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Justice Department alleges the city has failed to maintain and promptly repair the wheel lifts on the JATRAN bus route. Federal officials said in a news release the city also has failed to properly train personnel to assist passengers with disabilities.

The lawsuit was filed in 2008 on behalf of 11 residents and advocates for the disabled. The lawsuit didn’t seek monetary damages, but asked that the court order improvements.
