The city of Petal will borrow up to $1 million to pay bills and avoid laying off employees for the short-term.

Alderman Steve Stringer says the money will be paid back over the next three years. He says the decision was reached Tuesday after a meeting with city department heads.

Stringer says some jobs will be cut in the new budget year that begins Oct. 1. He says department heads will work with the board to determine where cuts can be made.
