Poplarville Ward’s hit during power outage

Ward’s in Poplarville was robbed of some of its cash during the planned power outage Saturday morning.

Capt. Rossie Creel with the Poplarville Police Department said the burglary took place between the hours of 1 and 2:43 a.m.

That night Mississippi Power had planned an outage from Friday midnight to 4 a.m. Saturday to conduct some maintenance at a substation in the area, according to a press release from the utility last week.

Creel said the suspect, who is still at large and unidentified, gained access to the restaurant by breaking the drive-through window. An officer on patrol noticed the broken window and contacted the owner. When the owner arrived, she discovered that money was missing from the restaurant.

No fingerprints or other evidence was left at the scene. The department was expecting some attempts such as the burglary the planned outage and had extra officers on patrol.

Creel said if the restaurant did have an alarm system that the outage would have rendered it inoperable.
