Authorities say a 21-year-old mother who crashed her sport-utility vehicle into the Pascagoula River Tuesday with her two young children inside has died.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd identified the victim as Tosha Caudillo of Helena. Her two children, 3-year-old Trinity Hototh, and 10-month-old Jaden Hototh, are still in critical condition at Alabama hospitals.

The children’s grandmother, Tammy Hototh, made it out of the SUV in good condition.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd says Caudillo apparently lost control of her SUV on Wade-Vancleave Road right before the river bridge. The vehicle plunged into about 9 feet of water and several people on the scene pulled the family out of the SUV after the crash.

Byrd said a preliminary investigation indicates speed was likely a factor in the wreck.
