After wrecking his vehicle an out of town man apparently broke into a unoccupied camper for a night’s sleep.

The Texas man, 40 year-old Daniel Hiram James, was charged with burglary after deputies and investigators looking into a report of a camper break-in found him walking along the side of the road.

Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said the case began when the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department got a call Sunday morning concerning some damage to a camper in front of a home on 4000 block of Highway 53. Investigators found pry marks on the door of the camper and a broken window, allegedly used by James to gain entry to the camper.

James was found walking along Highway 53 later that day and taken into custody. Investigation into the matter found that James had wrecked his van sometime during the previous night. That van was found by deputies abandoned in the ditch where James allegedly wrecked it, Tucker said. Deputies noted that when James was taken into custody they could smell an intoxicating substance emanating from his person.

The bed of the camper appeared as though someone had slept in it and the cabinets were left open, Tucker said. No items were reported to have been taken from the camper.

James, of 10318 Saqeuale Lane, Texas, was charged with commercial burglary.
