Gov. Haley Barbour says $2 million in federal Hurricane Katrina money will be used to pay for a transitional workforce housing facility in Gulfport.

Barbour said the facility is one of 36 workforce housing projects providing more than 6,000 affordable units in the counties hardest hit by the 2005 storm.

The Gulfport facility will be 10,000-square-feet and will house 60 low-income residents. It will include semiprivate dormitory-style housing, laundry, and recreational space for males.

According to a release from Barbour’s office, homeless clients who obtain full-time employment will be charged a fee not to exceed $55 per week, based on their income until they can transition to more permanent affordable housing.
