CARRIERE — Picayune ended a losing streak and in the process won its first Division 8-4A game of the season in prep fast-pitch softball action Tuesday night.

The Lady Tide banged out 17 hits on the road against arch-rival Pearl River Central and took a 9-3 win over the Lady Devils at the PRC Sports Complex.

Picayune moves to 8-10 overall with the win and stands 1-4 in league play. The Lady Devils are 3-9 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Picayune jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after two frames and never looked back, as Lady Tide pitcher Jessie Frierson retired the first 12 batters she faced.

Taylor Seals wielded the big stick for the Lady Tide, as she had five hits including a solo homer and a double and three singles and also drove in five runs. Brandi Rabion added three hits and two RBI’s, while Tiffany Devore had three hits and drove in a run also. Hillary Dickens had two hits while Tiffany Reed had a two run single as well in her first game in over two weeks while she recovered from an injury.

Brooke Serpas had a single for PRC in the bottom of the fifth to break up Frierson’s no-hitter, while Devin Truitt had an RBI-single for the Lady Devils and Shelby Lott had an RB.

Frierson struck out nine and allowed just the two singles in picking up the win, while Becky Mitchell took the loss.

Picayune travels to Poplarville on Thursday, while PRC travels to D’Iberville Thursday.

Picayune baseball

Picayune remained unbeaten in Division 8-4A baseball action by knocking off visiting D’Iberville 4-2 in league play Tuesday night. The win was not only the eighth straight for the Maroon Tide overall, but pushed Picayune to 5-0 in league play and 9-1 overall.

“We still haven’t played our best game yet,” Picayune head coach Cayne Stockstill said. “We have to keep improving, but each win gets us closer (to the playoffs).”

Bryce Ladner remained perfect as well for Picayune, as he moved to 4-0 on the mound with the pitching win. He scattered five hits.

Brett Milner gave Ladner all the support he would need, when he cracked a two run double in the second and then came around to score on a wild pitch to put Picayune up 3-0.

The Maroon Tide made it 4-0 in the fifth, when Hunter Gill’s sacrifice fly plated Jacob Riser.

D’Iberville got two runs in the sixth, but the Maroon Tide hung on.

The Warriors dropped to 2-3 in league play.

Picayune remains tied for second in the league standings with St. Stanislaus, just behind Long Beach which is 7-0.

The Maroon Tide travels to D’Iberville Friday.

PRC baseball

LONG BEACH — Homestanding Long Beach remained unbeaten in Division 8-4A play with a 4-0 win over Pearl River Central Tuesday night.

Ramsey Graham took the loss for the Blue Devils, as the Bearcats broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the fourth. PRC managed just four singles by four different players against winning pitcher Michael Paul. The teams met again in Carriere on Friday and then PRC hosts Stone at 11 a.m., and Petal at 3 p.m., on Saturday.

Poplarville baseball

Tuesday’s game between Poplarville and St. Martin was rained out and is slated to be played Thursday at 6 p.m., in St. Martin That game will start a stretch of four games in three days for the Hornets, who are set to face Clinton and Hattiesburg in Hattiesburg on Friday and then Rogers Heritage from Arkansas on Saturday in Hattiesburg.
