Jackson Mayor Frank Melton says city departments are cutting costs and freezing unfilled positions to make up for two months of sluggish sales tax revenues.

Melton said on Wednesday that citywide budget cuts will equal 3 percent. The plan calls for all city departments to pare back, reducing expenses such as travel budgets and overtime.

Melton said no layoffs of full-time workers are planned.

City Administrator Rick Hill said Jackson has lost almost $1.1 million in anticipated sales tax revenue since the fiscal year that began Oct. 1. Sales taxes bring in about 30 percent of the city’s annual revenue.

The city still has money in its reserves. Hill said there is about $8.3 million in savings.
