The Popp’s Ferry Bridge in Biloxi is closed after a barge knocked out a large section of the span.

Officials say Margaret Johnson, the bridgetender, was the only person on the bridge Friday and was able to escape. Her car ended up in the water.

The accident occurred when the bridge was in the upright position to allow a tug and its barges to pass.

Officials say one barge sank and a second appeared to be taking on water.

Traffic was being diverted around the bridge area.
