Adams County officials are considering a system that will warn county and Natchez residents by telephone of hazardous weather.

Adams County Emergency Management Director Stan Owens says the system uses a database of phone numbers to call residents in a specific area to alert them to any type of danger.

Owens says if there were a chemical spill downtown, for example, he could alert only residents in the impacted area of the danger.

It also would alert residents in specific areas to weather dangers as soon as the National Weather Service issues a warning specific to their area.

Owens says the system is completely automated.

Owens hopes the county and City of Natchez will split the cost, which runs about $22,500 a year.
