Hancock Co. gets $85M for Katrina recovery

Hancock County will receive $85 million for community revitalization projects as part of Hurricane Katrina recovery.

Gov. Haley Barbour announced the funding Tuesday.

The money goes to projects identified by the county and its municipalities and includes $37.5 million for construction of a new jail and justice court and a new Emergency Operations Center.

Barbour says more projects could be funded in the future.

Among other awards were $25 million for various water and wastewater projects in the county; and $13 million for a central fire station and public safety center-police department in Waveland.
