For the second straight week, Poplarville put together one pretty good half of football.

And for the second straight week, it wasn’t enough for the Hornets to pull out a win.

Poplarvill led homestanding Vancleave 14-10 just before halftime Friday night, but the Bulldogs bounced back with 27 consecutive unaswered points to take a 37-14 win.

The Hornets fall to 1-7 overall with the loss in the non-region game, while Vancleave snapped a four game losing streak and stands 4-4 on the season.

Vancleave quarterback Colin Bray ran for 156 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in the win.

Dre Whittle also ran for 121 yards for the Bulldogs in the win.

Whittle got things rolling for Vancleave in the first period, as he ran 62 yards for a score on the first play from scrimmage.

But Poplarville answered, as Gabe Rhodes sprinted 70 yards for his own scoring samper and the game was tied 7-7.

Poplarville’s G.W. Miller set the Hornets up in good position to take the lead with a 64 yard run to the Vancleave 1, and Ira White covered that distance on the next play. Shelby Purvis boted both extra points, and Poplarville led 14-10 with 1:35 to play before halftime.

But Bray would guide the Bulldogs on a quick scoring drive, hitting Whittle on a 35 yard scoring pass just before intermission to put Vancleave ahead for good 17-14 entering the second half.

The second half was all Vancleave, as the Bulldogs got a 3 yard touchdown plunge from Britt Yates to make it 24-14. Bray then led the way to seal the win, as he ran 36 yards for a score and hooked up with Anthony Izzio on a 10 yard touchdown toss.

Justin Copeland nailed a 35 yard field goal for Vancleave and also added four extra points in the win.

Poplarville, which had five turnovers, travels to Bay High Friday.
