A flamingo whose arrival during the Gulf of Mexico storms this summer captured the attention of coast residents is dead.

Officials say the pink bird’s neck was broken in two places.

The body of the big bird, believed to have arrived from the Miami area, was brought to the Bay-Waveland animal shelter earlier this month. Apparently the flamingo had favored the beaches in Hancock County in recent weeks.

The remains, now frozen, will be turned over to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

Jan Dubuisson, a Mississippi Coast Audubon Society member known for her protection of Least terns, is asking U.S. Wildlife and Fisheries to investigate the flamingo’s death because it is protected under federal migratory bird laws.
