The Adams County Board of Supervisors is seeking an attorney general’s opinion regarding debris removal from private property following Hurricane Gustav.

Adams County officials say state law bars the county from entering private property or providing services to individual citizens, but if the property owner is not present, the county can remove debris that could be considered an immediate threat.

Board president Henry Watts says a large fallen tree can present a threat to citizens’ health and safety and can be removed. The opinion is being sought to determine whether the board is interpreting the law correctly.
