Two southwest Mississippi cities have increased natural gas rates for local customers.

In Gloster, rates will increase 48 percent. Officials say Gloster’s rates will go from $14.50 for the first 1,000 cubic feet and $13.50 per 1,000 thereafter to a flat $21.40 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Liberty’s rates will rise from $15.50 per 1,000 cubic feet to $19.50.

Gloster Mayor Billy Johnson says the city held down rates during the winter but the increase was necessary.

In Liberty, Mayor Ricky Stratton says rates also were held down during the winter months.
