Police say a small amount ammonia was released due to a faulty valve on a railroad tank car that was parked on rails near U.S. Highway 90 in Pascagoula.

Police Capt. Jamie Hunter said Friday that the ammonia release posed no danger to the public and that traffic on the busy coastal highway was not halted.

Police were called to the scene after receiving a report of a chemical smell near a Wal-Mart, Hunter said. A check identified the valve problem on one of several parked tank cars.

Hunter said representatives from the fire department, CSX railroad and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality were called to the scene and a CSC technician was assigned to make the repair.
