A ban on smoking in Pontotoc buildings open to the public is now in effect.

The Pontotoc Board of Aldermen approved the ordinance in April, making it effective Thursday. It allows exceptions only for tobacco stores and private offices.

The new ordinance mirrors similar ordinances adopted in other cities around Mississippi.
