17-year-old arrested after shot fired at Quitman schoo

Authorities are considering both federal and state charges against a 17-year-old who they say fired a gun near a school in the southeast Mississippi town of Quitman.

Police Chief Chuck Fowler says the unidentified teen fired a warning shot while standing on a road next to Quitman High School. Fowler says no one was ever in danger Monday afternoon as students left for the day, but that authorities are taking the case seriously.

Fowler says that if federal or state felony charges don’t apply, the teenager likely will be charged with “a whole bunch of misdemeanors.”

Investigators say the suspect, who is not enrolled at the school, apparently had argued with some Quitman students over the weekend and showed up at the school Monday to confront them.
