The Pontotoc Board of Aldermen has approved a ban on smoking in buildings open to the public.

The ordinance, approved Tuesday, allows exceptions only for tobacco stores and private offices. It goes into effect May 1.

The new ordinance mirrors similar ordinances adopted in Starkville, Tupelo, Mantachie, Oxford and other cities around Mississippi.
