Mississippi transportation officials say construction has been completed on a pedestrian walkway on the Biloxi Bay Bridge.

The pedestrian walkway on the U.S. Highway 90 bridge, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, was set to open Thursday, said project engineer Kelly Castleberry with the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

The $338.6 million new bridge will have six traffic lanes and include a shared biking and pedestrian path. It will provide about 95 feet of vertical clearance to accommodate marine traffic.

Castleberry said all three of the westbound lanes of the bridge have been opened to traffic. The entire bridge is scheduled to be opened Monday. Castleberry said crews are working on a number of finishing touches on the bridge, including touchup paint on the railing and the removal of construction materials and portable offices.

Also next week, Castleberry said U.S. 90 will be opened for traffic from Interstate 110 to the Biloxi Bay Bridge.

“Starting next week the Highway 90 corridor from Highway 609 in Ocean Springs to Interstate 110 in Biloxi will have two lanes in each direction open, allowing motorists to move through east Biloxi and across the Biloxi Bay Bridge more efficiently,” Castleberry said.
