A Canton woman has been charged with capital murder and child abuse in the 2004 death of her 3-year-old daughter.

Police Chief Robert Winn said Barbara Veal was arrested Monday. He said new evidence and an unidentified new eyewitness led to the arrest.

Winn said Veal is accused of delivering the blow that killed Samantha Stewart. The child died on April 15, 2004, at the Madison County Medical Center from what an autopsy revealed was blunt-force trauma to the abdomen.

Winn said Veal was being held in the Madison County jail on a $1 million bond on the capital murder charge and a $100,000 bond on the child abuse charge.
