2nd case of West Nile virus reported in Mississippi

The state Department of Health reports this year’s second case of West Nile virus.

Officials said Monday the new case was reported in Madison County in central Mississippi. The state’s first confirmed case came last week in Lincoln County.

Mississippi had 136 confirmed cases of the mosquito-borne virus in 2007 with four deaths.

Symptoms may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes.

Infection can cause encephalitis or meningitis in a small number of people. Those illnesses can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death.
