Two Jackson County men have been sentenced to 20-year prison terms, with 12 years suspended, for their roles in the murder of Derek Williams three years ago.

Circuit Judge Robert Krebs on Monday imposed the identical sentences on Bryan Scott Carter and Kerry Lanell Johnson II.

Carter and Johnson were two of three men charged in the slaying of Williams on March 12, 2005.

In January, a Pascagoula jury convicted John Louis Woods of capital murder. Woods was sentenced to life in prison.

Carter and Johnson both pleaded guilty to manslaughter and commercial burglary charges before Woods’ trial. Carter, 22, and Johnson, 20, were sentenced to seven years each on the commercial burglary charge.

Prosecutors said the burglary charge stemmed from the robbery of a gas station hours before Williams was killed.

Carter and Johnson have been in jail since they were arrested in early April 2005 and will get credit for that time.

Prosecutors said Williams was beaten to death with a metal bar during a camping trip at Bluff Creek Water Park.

Prosecutors said the three men loaded Williams’ body into the back of Williams’ truck and drove to Mobile County, Ala., where they left the body at a trash dumpsite.
