Norfolk-based sailor dies after accident at sea

The Navy has released the name of the sailor aboard the Norfolk-based carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt who died from a head injury when the ship hit heavy seas off the Florida coast.

The Navy said 24-year-old Petty Officer 3rd Class George Earl Thompson Jr. was from Pascagoula, Mississippi. He joined the Navy in June 2004 and reported to the Roosevelt in October 2004.

The Navy said the ship was conducting routine operations off the coast of Jacksonville Saturday when the weather took a rapid turn for the worse, but no other details of the accident were released.

Thompson was taken by helicopter to a Jacksonville hospital, and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving there.

The Navy is investigating the incident.
