The Mississippi State University Extension Service is donating several hundred of its used computers to state law enforcement agencies.

Extension Service spokesman Elmo Collum said the 433 computers were valued at about $650,000 when new. The distribution is being carried out with the help of Homeland Security.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is issuing the computers, which are 1 to 3 years old, to various law enforcement agencies based on need.

Utica Police Chief Tim Myles says his department will soon get two desktop computers and a laptop. The nine-member force runs on a $200,000-a-year budget and cannot afford to replace its computers, which are more than five years old, Myles said.
