New Poplarville head coach Jimmie Agent saw some powerful pitching performances in his days as a top assistant at Oak Grove.

It’s doubtful he saw any more impressive than one of his own put on Friday.

Poplarville senior hurler Ashley Graeter twirled a no-hit shutout against Picayune, striking out 12 as the Hornets picked up a 2-0 win in Region 8-4A action.

Graeter walked one batter and one Maroon Tide hitter reached on an error in the dominating performance.

“It was as good of a performance as I have ever seen,” Agent, whose team moves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in league play, said. “He was everything we expected him to be. He is our ace and he proved that tonight.”

Graeter, a Pearl River Community College signee, used an assortment of pitches and several different delivery styles to keep the maroon Tide at bay all evening.

Josh Reed gave Graeter all the support he would need with an RBI-single in the first frame.

Jonathan Anderson added an RBI-single for the Hornets in the third frame to wrap up the scoring.

Greater’s outstanding performance overshadowed a solid outing from Picayune pitcher Hunter Gill. Gill fell to 1-1 with the loss, but allowed just six hits and struck out four in going the distance. Picayune beat Poplarville on Tuesday to open region play behind a two-hit shout from T. J. House.
